My name is Martyn Cooper and I suffer from being a sequential artist. What I hope you are reading is my journal comic, documenting all my adventures, be they amazing victories, great blunders or just little comments on everyday life. I invite you to read, laugh, cry and perhaps live vicariously through me. My condolences.
Most people at SCAD (like me) start journal comics for class requirements, then drop them after about a month or so. These are very prolific people with lots of ideas that get in the way of their journals. I’m different. I started this in November 2008 for the Hell of it and I’ve been doing it for a number of months now because I don’t do much else really. Perhaps this is an exaggeration, perhaps not. I’ve got to stay in character here.
I initially drew my influences from Pranas Noikajoikalas (of Inkdick), Bart Muller (of the Daily Odyssey) and Calvin Burkhalter (of Kevin Burkhaler’s Journal Comic). Then I got into James Kochal-thinger and his American Elf strip. I try to combine all of these approaches and styles with a little bit of my own ideas. I try to include things in my journals that bridge over several days to form a “story arc” of sorts.
Sometimes I get behind on these, what with being in college, doing homework, seeing friends, going to work, banging visiting my girlfriend and being a slacker, but I always set aside a blank page to catch up on whatever I’ve missed. If by any chance there’s a long abscence of comics or blog posts, then I probably died. Being alive is a big part of doing a comic about your own life.
